Maria Magdalena Basson was born on 22 May 1735 at de Caep de Goede Hoop, Dutch Cape Colony.

She was the daughter of Johannes Jan Basson and Johanna Catharina van Jaarsvelt.

She married Pieter van der Bijl on 21 Aug 1757 at N. G. Kerk Swartland, de Caep de Goede Hoop, Cape Colony, South Africa. He was born on 5 Jan 1714 at de Caep de Goede Hoop, Dutch Cape Colony. He died on 27 Nov 1789 at de Caep de Goede Hoop, Dutch Cape Colony at the age of 75.
