He married Shirley van Tonder on 9 May 1959. Shirley was the daughter of Johannes Chrisparus van Tonder and Vera Caroline Alice Norris. She was born on 14 Mar 1935. She died on 23 Aug 2011 at Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa at the age of 76.
