He married Mary Louise McMaster. Mary Louise was the daughter of Colin Allison McMaster and Mary Ellen Cameron. She was born on 4 Apr 1903 at Sepani, Thaba Nchu, Orange Free State, South Africa. She died on 10 Sep 1958 at Dewetsdorp, Orange Free State, South Africa at the age of 55.

They had 3 children: Mary Ruth Howell, Richard John Hubert Howell and Living.

He died on 30 Sep 1954.
