Joseph Denton (Dent Or Goggy) Cowen was born on 30 Dec 1904 at Barrow-in-Furness, County Barrow, England.

He was the son of Joseph William Cowen and Selina Humble Cruikshanks.

He was christened on 5 Feb 1905 at Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire, England.

He was recorded in the census in 1911 at 31 Powerful Street, Barrow In Furness, Walney Barrow-In-Furness, Lancashire, England.

He emigrated on 11 Aug 1922, from Southampton, England to Cape Town, South Africa, aboard the Walmer Castle.

He married Marjorie Jane ( Ba) Whipp on 3 Nov 1930 at Germiston, Transvaal, South Africa. Marjorie Jane ( Ba) was the daughter of Thomas Hodgson Whipp and Edith Ann(i)e Dearlove. She was born on 11 Mar 1904 at Boksburg, Transvaal. She died on 17 Jan 1994 at Anerley, Umtentwini, Port Shepstone, Natal, South Africa at the age of 89.

They had one child: Denise Cowen.

He served in Commended for valuable services to war between 1 Jan 1946.
