Alexander Dryden was born on 6 Dec 1867 at Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

He was the son of Adam Dryden and Margaret Hunter.

He married Margaret Mary (Daisy) Munro on 30 Mar 1898 at Pinetown, Natal, South Africa. Margaret Mary (Daisy) was the daughter of George Munro and Selina Jane Davie. She was born on 28 Jan 1876 at Umgeni, Durban, Colony of Natal. She died on 15 Jun 1946 at Johannesburg General Hospital, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 70.

They had 3 children: Alexander Hunter Munro Dryden, Margaret Selina (Peggy) Dryden and Agnes Hunter Dryden.

He immigrated from Inanda, from London to Natal on 7 Nov 1905.

He died on 29 Aug 1941 at Government Hospital, Durban, Natal, South Africa at the age of 73.
