He married Lilian Margaret Diack on 8 Jul 1925 at Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Lilian Margaret was the daughter of James Adam Diack and Margaret Hunter. She was born on 27 Nov 1893 at Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She died on 11 Jan 1969 at Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland at the age of 75.

They had 3 children: Ian James Mitchell, Hunter Diack Mitchell and Robert Alexander Mitchell.
