He married Johanna Birrell on 13 Aug 1853 at Elie, Fifeshire, Scotland. Johanna was the daughter of John Birrell and Janet Ovenston(e). She was born on 27 Oct 1834 at Elie, Fifeshire, Scotland. She died on 1 Oct 1903 at Elie, Fifeshire, Scotland at the age of 68.

They had one child: George Birrell Sutherland.
