He married Anne Allan. Anne was the daughter of John Allan and Elizabeth Ovenstone.

They had 11 children: Elspeth Ovenston, James Ovenston, Margaret Ovenston(e), William Ovenston, Agnes Ovenston, Anne Ovenston, John Ovenston, Helen Ovenston, Janet Ovenston(e), Isabel Ovenston(e) and Barbara Ovenston.
